  22. 1. Intended Use
  23. ---------------

  25. This program package is a checkbook/budget manager for home or
  26. small business use. Anyone familiar with a regular checkbook can
  27. quick start use it.

  29. 2. Disk Packing List
  30. --------------------

  32. The EliteCheck v1.1a program package should contain the following
  33. files:
  34.  
  35. EC.EXE         The EliteCheck program
  36. EC.REF         EliteCheck Reference Id
  37. EC.HLP         On-line help file
  38. READ.ME        A text file that you must read first before you use
  39.                the program
  40. PACKING.LST    List of files in your package
  41. INSTALL.EXE    Installation program
  42. MANUAL.DOC     On disk User Manual
  43. VENDOR.DOC     Vendor distribution information
  44. REGISTER.DOC   Registration and license information
  45. REGISTER.FRM   Registration Form
  46. ECFILES.EXE    Utility program to increase files parameter in the
  47.                CONFIG.SYS file
  48.  
  49. 3. Important Files to Read
  50. --------------------------
  51.  
  52. Anyone wishing to use this program must read this file first. The
  53. MANUAL.DOC file contains a full description on how to use
  54. EliteCheck. To register your use of EliteCheck, read the
  55. REGISTER.DOC file and follow the instructions.
  56.  
  57. Shareware distributors, disk vendors, computer clubs, and BBS
  58. SYSOPs must read the VENDOR.DOC file.
  59.  
  60. The following text files can be printed to your printer:
  61.  
  62.      READ.ME        PACKING.LST    MANUAL.DOC     VENDOR.DOC
  63.      REGISTER.DOC   REGISTER.FRM
  64.  
  65. If you want to print any of above text files, you could use the
  66. COPY command to print it. For example, to print the MANUAL.DOC file
  67. to your printer, insert the disk that contains the MANUAL.DOC file
  68. in drive A and type this command:
  69.  
  70.      COPY A:\MANUAL.DOC PRN
  71.  
  72. If you are a registered user, you do not need to print the
  73. MANUAL.DOC file since your package includes a printed User Manual.
  74.  
  75. 4. First Things to do
  76. ---------------------
  77.  
  78. 1)   Make sure that the EliteCheck distribution disk has all the
  79.      files listed above.
  80.  
  81. 2)   Make a backup copy of your EliteCheck distribution disk.
  82.  
  83. 3)   Make sure that your computer has:
  84.  
  85.      -    DOS 3.0 or later version
  86.      -    minimum 512K memory
  87.      -    two floppy disk drives or hard drive
  88.      -    the CONFIG.SYS file in the root directory of your boot
  89.           disk that contains a line:
  90.  
  91.                FILES=nn
  92.  
  93.           in which nn must be at least 15.
  94.  
  95. 5. Using ECFILES utility to check the CONFIG.SYS file
  96. -----------------------------------------------------
  97.  
  98. To ensure that the CONFIG.SYS file has a FILES parameter properly,
  99. you can use ECFILES utility program supplied with this package.
  100.  
  101. To run ECFILES, simply invoke it and follow the instructions given
  102. by the program.

  105. 6. Installing EliteCheck
  106. -------------------------
  107.

  110.      If you have been using the previous version 1.1, you can
  111.      continue to use your existing account data files with this new
  112.      version. Simply install in your current EliteCheck directory.
  113.      All existing program files will then be replaced by new ones
  114.      without affecting existing account data files.

  118.      If you obtained the EliteCheck package in an archived file and
  119.      decompressed it on your disk, you are already ready to start
  120.      using EliteCheck. In that case, skip this section.
  121.

  123. |  | To Install EliteCheck to a Hard Disk

  126.      1)   Start your computer.
  127.  
  128.      2)   Insert the EliteCheck Install disk in drive A.
  129.  
  130.      3)   Run the INSTALL.EXE by typing as follows:
  131.  
  132.                A:INSTALL C:\EC
  133.  
  134.           The Installation program will automatically install
  135.           EliteCheck to the \EC directory in drive C. If you want
  136.           to install EliteCheck to a directory other than \EC,
  137.           simply replace C:\EC with the directory path name you
  138.           want when you invoke the installation program.
  139.  
  140.           If the specified directory contains the program files of
  141.           the previous version 1.1, they all will be replaced by
  142.           the new files. Your account data files, however, will
  143.           remain unaffected by this installation.
  144.  
  145.           If the specified directory does not exist, INSTALL.EXE
  146.           will automatically create it.

  149. |  | To Install EliteCheck with Two Floppy Drives

  152. To use EliteCheck without a hard disk, you need two floppy disk
  153. drives: one for a EliteCheck program disk and the other for a data
  154. disk. To install EliteCheck to a floppy diskette, do the following
  155. steps:
  156.  
  157.      1)   Start your computer with a DOS system diskette.
  158.  
  159.      2)   Insert the EliteCheck Install disk in drive A.
  160.  
  161.      3)   Insert a formatted blank diskette in drive B.
  162.  
  163.      3)   Run the INSTALL.EXE by typing as follows:
  164.  
  165.                A:INSTALL B:\
  166.  
  167.           While running the INSTALL program, follow the
  168.           instructions on the screen.
  169.  
  170.           The Installation program will install EliteCheck to the
  171.           root directory in drive B.
  172.  
  173. 7. Starting EliteCheck
  174. ----------------------
  175.  
  176. To start EliteCheck on a hard disk:
  177.  
  178.      1)   Change current directory to the EliteCheck directory.
  179.  
  180.                     C>CD C:\EC

  182.      2)   Invoke EliteCheck by typing EC followed by <ENTER> key.

  186. To start EliteCheck on a floppy disk:
  187.  
  188.      1)   Make sure that your computer was booted from the DOS disk
  189.           that contains the CONFIG.SYS file with a line 'FILES=15'
  190.           (or greater than 15).
  191.  
  192.      2)   Insert EliteCheck program disk in drive A.
  193.  
  194.      3)   Invoke EliteCheck by typing EC followed by <ENTER> key.

  198.      4)   Insert your data disk in drive B when EliteCheck
  199.           instructs you to do so.

  201. If your monitor screen becomes unreadable when you start
  202. EliteCheck, start EliteCheck with /M option:
  203.  
  204.      C:>EC /M

  206. 8. First-Time Account Setup
  207. ---------------------------
  208.  
  209. When you start EliteCheck for the first time, EliteCheck will bring
  210. up the Account Setup Window. Enter required information on the
  211. blank entries in the Account Setup Window as follows:
  212.  
  213.      Account Type:  Select either BUSINESS or PERSONAL based on
  214.                     how you will use your first account. To select
  215.                     the account type, press Space bar.
  216.  
  217.      Account Name:  Enter 1-25 alpha-numeric characters to
  218.                     identify your account.
  219.  
  220.      Account No:    Enter the account number (or anything to
  221.                     describe the account). You may leave this
  222.                     entry blank.
  223.  
  224.      Balance:       Enter the amount of opening balance.
  225.  
  226.      As of:         Enter the opening date.
  227.  
  228. To move between entries, use the following keys:
  229.  
  230.      UP Arrow       move up
  231.      DOWN Arrow     move down
  232.      TAB            move to next entry
  233.      Shift-TAB      move to previous entry
  234.      ENTER          move to next entry or complete the account
  235.                     setup if pressed in the last entry
  236.  
  237. 9. Exiting EliteCheck
  238. ---------------------
  239.  
  240. To exit EliteCheck, do the following steps:
  241.  
  242.      1)   If none of the menu items on the top line of the screen
  243.           is highlighted, press <ESC> until one of them becomes
  244.           highlighted.
  245.  
  246.      2)   If Quit menu item is not highlighted, press right arrow
  247.           key until Quit menu item gets highlighted.
  248.  
  249.      3)   Press <ENTER>.
  250.  
  251.      4)   When you see a pulldown menu item saying "Exit to DOS",
  252.           press E or <ENTER>.
  253.  
  254. 10. What's New in This Version
  255. ------------------------------
  256.  
  257. A minor update to solve problems found in the previous version 1.1:
  258.  
  259.      Bug fixes
  260.  
  261.      .    Changing the check number of an existing transaction now
  262.           works without an error condition.
  263.  
  264.      .    EliteCheck 1.1 got stuck in an error condition when the
  265.           Mark Cleared Transaction pulldown menu choice was
  266.           selected with the blank transaction entry partially
  267.           filled in. This problem is now fixed.
  268.  
  269.      .    Category items are now included in the Check Register
  270.           print-out.
  271.  
  272.      Enhancements
  273.  
  274.      .    In Register, you can now undo changes made to the
  275.           highlighted entry by pressing Ctrl-C.
  276.  
  277.      .    Hyphens (-) are now allowed in the direct payee entry as
  278.           well as in the payee list.
  279.  
  280.      .    The reconciliation summary display now includes the
  281.           difference amount between the adjusted bank balance and
  282.           the new checkbook balance.

  284.      .    Almost all popup windows can now be dragged around the
  285.           screen by pressing Ctrl-Up, Ctrl-Down, Ctrl-Left, Ctrl-
  286.           Right, Ctrl-PgUp, and Ctrl-PgDn keys.

  288.      .    Minor enhancements in screen display

  290.      .    Minor updates in online help messages

  292. 11. Update to the Manual
  293. ------------------------
  294.  
  295.      To clarify the intended option, the transaction confirmation
  296.      window in the Register now provides the following three menu
  297.      choices: Save, Undo, and Escape (instead of Yes, No, and Esc).
  298.  
  299.      Save      to save the highlighted transaction
  300.      Undo      to undo changes to the highlighted transaction
  301.      Escape    to return to the Register without recording.
